Red Eye Q&A

What is red eye?

Red eye is a symptom that can appear with many ocular conditions and issues. It can range from a pink tinge to the whites of your eyes to a deep red.

Red eye may feature diffuse (all over) eye discoloration, or it can appear mainly as dilated blood vessels in the eye.

What causes red eye?

There are many possible causes of red eye, including:

  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye allergies
  • Corneal abrasions or ulcers
  • Blepharitis
  • Infections
  • Excessive contact lens wear
  • Ocular rosacea
  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma
  • Pterygium and pinguecula
  • Uveitis
  • Retinoblastoma
  • Subconjunctival hemorrhage

Medication side effects may also cause red eyes. For example, some glaucoma eye drops can cause eye redness.

When should I see the ophthalmologist about red eye?

Red eye may be a minor issue that happens only occasionally — but it can also be a sign of a serious problem within your eyes.

If you have eye redness that persists for more than a few days, or if your red eye happens alongside other symptoms like eye pain, vision changes, or headaches, call Beverly Hills Eye Center right away for help.
